Secretary of State Pompeo took a shot at John Bolton on his Twitter Sunday — posting a screenshot showing him grinning broadly above a chyron announcing the former head of the National Security Council’s departure.
Pompeo’s post — which came on his personal account rather than his official government account — contained no other words or video, and came as Bolton’s new tell-all has enraged President Trump, who called Bolton “a liar,” and whose administration tried to block its release.
But a federal judge quashed that effort, and the book, “The Room Where it Happened,” is expected to be published Tuesday.
Pompeo last week accused Bolton of being a “traitor” — though he acknowledged at the time that he had not read the book.
“I’ve not read the book, but from the excerpts I’ve seen published, John Bolton is spreading a number of lies, fully-spun half-truths, and outright falsehoods,” Pompeo said then in a statement.
“It is both sad and dangerous that John Bolton’s final public role is that of a traitor who damaged America by violating his sacred trust with its people. To our friends around the world: you know that President Trump’s America is a force for good in the world,” he added.
In the nearly 600-page book, Bolton also asserts that Pompeo and former White House chief of staff John Kelly resented the extent to which Jared Kushner was tasked with handling foreign affairs.
“Why is Jared calling [the] Mexicans?” Kelly purportedly fumed to Trump in one blowup, as “caravans” of migrants headed toward the US border.
“Because I asked him to,” Trump supposedly responded. “None of you other geniuses have been able to stop the caravans.”
