Rain likely all day, strong to severe storms later this afternoon - WRAL.com

Thunderstorms and rain are likely for much Friday, especially west and northwest of Raleigh.

Areas to the west of Wake County are under a level 1 risk for severe weather Friday afternoon, but anyone could see storms and rain.

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said scattered showers will taper off mid-day break but, in the evening, storms become more likely, and some could be strong to severe in nature.

"Regardless of the risk area, we could see a strong to severe storm later today anywhere in the area," WRAL Zach Maloch said.

Level 1 risk for June 5, 2020

Damaging wind gusts will be the biggest threat.

There will be some sun on Friday, but cloud cover will keep temperatures below 90 degrees. High dew points will keep things steamy and humid.

Saturday could see some afternoon storms, but they will be more scattered than Friday's. Temperatures will rise into the low 90s.

"The bulk of Saturday looks dry," Gardner said.

7-Day Forecast

Sunday will be dry and, with dew points in the 40s and 50s, much less humid.

Tropical Storm Cristobal

Cristobal is currently a tropical depression and is not very organized. It is expected to move slowly over land through early Saturday morning, and then it will move north through the Gulf of Mexico, where it is likely to re-intensify into a tropical storm before making landfall along the Louisiana coast late Sunday or early Monday.

Cristobal will not pose any threats to North Carolina.
