Cian English: Two girls charged with murder over teen’s Gold Coast balcony death - NEWS.com.au

Two teenage girls have been charged with murder over the death of a Brisbane teenager who fell from a balcony at a Gold Coast apartment block while allegedly being robbed at knifepoint.

The girls, aged 15 and 16, were being interviewed this morning over the death of 19-year-old Cian English in Surfers Paradise in May.

Queensland Police announced the two girls would now face murder charges over Mr English’s fall, alleging they were “actively at the scene”.

Three other men have already been charged with murder.

Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said mobile phone footage had led them to arrest the two teenage girls today.

“We have a 19-year-old male who has died tragically and we have people who don't seem to care,” Mr Smith told reporters on the Gold Coast today.

“The investigations this week have led to additional video on the phone to some of the offenders which clearly show there is no remorse.

“Some of the post-offence conduct is reprehensible.”

Police will allege the group stole from an unconscious person at the scene.

“It is about time everyone in the community said ‘enough is enough’ and we pull these people up about their behaviour and their attitudes.”

The girls were arrested this morning and have been charged with murder, armed robbery, deprivation of liberty, torture and stealing.

Det Supt Smith said police would allege the two girls were “aiding or encouraging an offence”.

“(Police allege) it is clear they were actively encouraging. I think the community would expect, people that encourage this sort of behaviour are held to task and that is what we are doing today.

“We will be alleging (the girls) have seen him go over the verandah. They have looked down and saw he is obviously deceased and then they have stolen clothing off this unconscious male on the verandah. It really is ... it is beyond belief these people behave like this.”

Mr English’s body was discovered at the base of an apartment complex at View Ave in the early hours of May 23.

Police will allege in court the three men tried to rob Mr English and a friend at knifepoint.

“During the course of that, the victim has attempted to escape and has gone over the balcony and died,” Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said last month.
