Albanese expects 'swift action' from Premier on Somyurek - The Age

"I spoke to him extensively. I'm very confident that there will be swift action taken this morning," Mr Albanese told ABC News Breakfast.

Asked whether that meant Mr Somyurek should be sacked, he said that was a matter for the Premier. Mr Andrews declined to comment on Sunday night but has said he will address the issue on Monday.

"My view on tolerance of this sort of behaviour is very clear ... my attitude towards this has been consistent for a very long period of time, which is that when someone is bringing the party into disrepute, the party has a right to take action," Mr Albanese said.

Mr Albanese said he had no tolerance for any corrupt or inappropriate behaviour.

"What we saw last night was an individual who's driven to seek power for its own sake," Mr Albanese said.

"That is sad when we see it. We see it at various levels in - we have seen it from both political parties from time to time with individuals.

"That's not what drives me and that's not the sort of people that I want to be in senior positions in the Australian Labor Party."

Outside his house on Monday morning, Mr Somyurek ducked questions about his position.

Asked whether he had anything to say, or whether he would resign from the ALP, Mr Somyurek told reporters: "I’ll talk to you guys in the city. I’m going to parliament now".

Federal Nationals leader Michael McCormack said the branch stacking revealed in the investigation was unacceptable and that he would support an inquiry into it.

"People who are hurting badly from bushfires, from prolonged drought and from COVID-19 don't want to see politicians allegedly behaving in this sort of way," Mr McCormack told ABC News Breakfast.

"This is not acceptable. It's not on, and yes, of course, there should be an inquiry into it."
