Queensland communities on high alert as fires continue to burn - 9News

Firefighters are gaining the upper hand on three fires in Queensland's south west after a slight reprieve in conditions on the fireground put crews on the front foot.

However communities remain on edge with emergency warnings in place for residents in parts of Tara, Wieambilla and The Gums.

Twenty-fire trucks have been sent to the Tara fire, where favourable weather conditions have given crews the opportunity to consolidate containment lines.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Inspector Kent Barron said work has been successful at this stage but stressed it is still a dynamic situation.

Firefighters have focused on the north-western corner of the Tara fire with work to continue into the evening and tomorrow to strengthen containment lines.

A fire at Hannaford burnt within containment lines today however firefighters rounded up several small outbreaks.

Meanwhile the Moonie fire burnt within containment lines with work being done by both firefighters and local landholders.

Firefighters are preparing for increased fire weather on Tuesday with crews strengthening containment lines.

"It's a little bit of a break, a little bit of time for us to do some work to get on the front foot," Barron said.

"Through no fault of the crews out on the fireground we've been incredibly reactive to these fires.

"They're moving so fast, the fire behaviour is extreme.

"Today was just an opportunity with some lighter winds to get on the front foot.

"The weather wasn't exactly how we like it but it was better."

The fire service is constantly refreshing crews to manage fatigue as the work continues.
