'Too close to home': Almost 50 properties lost as Queensland firefighters race to contain bushfire before conditions worsen - 9News

Queensland firefighters are working to contain a massive blaze at Tara in the Western Downs region, with conditions expected to worsen on Tuesday.

The fire was burning near Golden Glow Road and was expected to impact Bennett School Road.

Locals in the area have been told to leave immediately as it will soon be unsafe to drive and lives are at risk.

Resident Ashlea Woodward was rushing to get out.

"I've got two small girls, dogs, and everything, so I just packed the car and got out because it's just too close to home," she said.

Some locals had only just been told it was safe to return home after fires last week when they were again told to leave.

Betty McCarthy said she was ready to go.

"It's just flared up - and then away it's gone." she said.

"So we've got our cars all ready and we've got things all ready to go."

Water bombers have worked to keep the blaze burning within containment lines.

After seven days sleeping in her car, Eve Wright was reduced to tears at the realisation her home was not among the 46 houses that have been reduced to ash.

"There's some that have just totally lost everything, it's going to be heartbreaking for them to go back and see their places gone and their animals," she said.

The first officer of the local brigade is also not letting the trauma of losing his home stop him from defending others.

"It's going to be very difficult to save property and any parts of the environment - it's about protecting lives tomorrow," Rural Fire Service Inspector Joe Cullen said.

Meanwhile, the threat caused by a suspected arsonist at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, which threatened Landsborough, has subsided for now.

But strong winds, high temperatures and low humidity predicted for Tuesday means conditions will worsen.

Rural Fire Service Superintendent John Welke also warned there will be a "significant deterioration in weather".

"We are expecting winds forecast in the vicinity of 30km/h and quite a warm day," he said.

A fire ban has been extended until midnight on Friday.

"We have already seen a number of new starts today that are further straining resources, please we implore people to be very conscious over the next week, our crews are very tired and we need to ensure that we are able to support the community of south-western Queensland," Welke said.

Firefighters from across the state have been redeployed in the region and Victorian fire crews are due to arrive in the area later this week to give locals a reprieve.

"Prepare to leave" warnings were in place for the communities of Colosseum, Miriam Vale, Carnarvon Gorge, Buckland, Consuelo and Rewan.
