The wreckage of a helicopter missing since Thursday has been found in the New South Wales Hunter region following an extensive land and sea search.
Key points:
- The 54-year-old pilot and his dog have been missing since Thursday morning
- Police found the wreckage at Yacaaba Headland at about noon today
- Authorities said no one has been found at the scene
The 54-year-old pilot of the helicopter has been missing since Thursday morning after taking off from Cessnock Airport with his dog on board.
He was headed to Wallis Island near Forster.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said it had commenced an investigation after NSW Police found wreckage in Hawks Nest at about noon on Saturday.
"The Robinson R66 single-engine turbine helicopter, which was reported missing on Thursday evening, was located on Saturday in waters off Yacaaba Headland by NSW Police with the assistance of ATSB transport safety investigators," a statement from the ATSB said.
NSW Police divers are still examining the wreckage.
Authorities said no-one has been found at the scene.
But the ATSB said the helicopter pilot's cockpit video camera was among items recovered at the scene and investigators would attempt to download and analyse any footage.
