Two brothers, including a junior Wests Tigers rugby league player, have faced court over the alleged murder of a Sydney underworld figure.
Key points:
- Dejan 'Danny' Radulovic died after an altercation with two men on July 29
- Accused Masei Tavui played for a Wests Tigers feeder club this season
- His brother appeared in court today and was denied bail
Eti Tovio Presley Tavui, 21, and Masei Tavui, 19, have been charged with the murder of Dejan 'Danny' Radulovic in Sydney's inner west on July 29.
Mr Radulovic, 29, who police said had a low-level involvement in organised crime, was found with significant injuries to his head and torso following an altercation with two men at Donnelly Street in Balmain.
He died a short time later in hospital, with a post-mortem examination finding that he had suffered a gunshot wound.
Police said a getaway car the accused pair allegedly used was found burnt out on Preston Avenue in Five Dock a short time later with a gun inside.
Brothers both denied bail
Masei Tavui, who is a Wests Tigers junior, was arrested at a home in Austral on Tuesday morning and charged with murder.
Officers attached to Strike Force Dears seized clothing relevant to the investigation and the 19-year-old faced Liverpool Local Court, where his lawyer did not apply for bail.
On Wednesday, his older brother Eti was charged with murder and fail to comply with a digital evidence access order direction by police.
The 21-year-old appeared in Liverpool Local Court via audio video link today, and his lawyer did not apply for bail.
Family members were gathered in the courtroom and did not make any comment outside the court following his appearance.
Masei Tavui played for the Western Suburbs Magpies — a feeder club for the Wests Tigers — in the under-19s competition this season.
Tigers release statement
In a statement, Wests Tigers said it had been made aware of the serious charges laid against one of the club's junior representative players.
"The player in question was previously a member of our Western Suburbs SG Ball squad in the 2023 season," the statement said.
"Both the NRL and NSWRL Integrity Units have been made aware of this matter.
"As this matter is before the court, the club will be making no further comment."
Both men will face Downing Centre Local Court on December 12.
