Helena Carr — the long-time wife of former New South Wales premier and foreign minister Bob Carr – has been declared brain dead from an aneurysm during an overseas trip.
Key points:
- Helena Carr suffered a brain bleed while in Vienna, losing consciousness in Mr Carr's arms
- Doctors say she is officially dead, at age 77
- Ms Carr was a successful businesswoman with ventures in the printing industry.
She was 77.
In a statement, Mr Carr said the pair were in Vienna, Austria when she suffered a brain bleed on Thursday night and lost consciousness in his arms.
Mr Carr said he has been told by doctors she is officially dead.
"Her little heart continues to beat but her brain has haemorrhaged with a massive amount of blood," Mr Carr said of his wife and partner of 50 years.
"She was the light of my life, the little friend always there. No-one ever smiled more, or with more spirit."
Mr Carr described the final hours he had with his wife, saying they had lunch with two Australian friends in Vienna and even went to the opera before she collapsed that night.
"Our 50-year partnership ended in the hotel bathroom when she sunk into my arms and I broke her fall to the floor," he said.
"Her eyes closed for the last time while I begged her not to leave me."
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said the entire Labor family was devastated by the news.
"Bob and Helena were a wonderful partnership with Helena offering unconditional support to Bob and Labor during his years in the premiership," he said in statement.
"Helena was also a very successful businesswoman in her own right.
"We feel for Bob and are concerned for him.
"The entire Labor family will be waiting for him to offer our friendship and support upon his return to Australia."
Political partnership
Mr Carr has paid tribute to the steadiness of their relationship during his years in politics.
"It is inconceivable I could have won office for my party and held the premiership for over 10 years without the steadiness of her companionship, her sense of fun and her lambent eyes," Mr Carr said.
Mr Carr revealed his wife had wanted to come to Australia from Malaysia, her country of birth.
"As a girl in Taiping, Malaysia, she had written letters to Australian schools and was accepted by Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta. She later studied economics at Sydney University," he said,
Mr Carr said the pair met on a stopover he had in Tahiti in 1971, coming back from the United States.
Ms Carr went on to become a successful businesswoman with ventures in the printing industry.
"Her first job in business was with CSR. She later became an expert in security printing and was appointed to the board of the biggest company in the field before becoming the half-owner and manager of a sizeable print company that specialised in high quality commercial work," Mr Carr said.
In an emotional end to his statement, Mr Carr said the light has gone out of his life.
"I know many have faced this challenge, the loss of a life partner, the journey no-one wishes. One reason to trying is my sense she is there telling me to go on — for her."
