Min Htet and his mum were in bed when they were woken at 2.45am by an enormous bang and discovered the bathroom of their Noble Park home a complete wreck.
"It's pretty bad and we are pretty shocked," he said.
"I couldn't imagine if someone at 2am was using the toilet then would have been really bad.
"I'm really lucky and really thankful."
It was an allegedly stolen taxi that crashed through the family's front fence, slamming into their front bathroom.
The driver allegedly ran from the scene.
Officers and police dogs searched the area and found the 18-year-old Noble Park man out of breath about 2.3km from the scene.
Neighbours said the house was now a "complete wreck".
"We heard a loud bang ... massive bang like an explosion," Craig Getley said.
Police believe the taxi involved was stolen from a home in nearby Kingsclere Avenue in Keysborough.
The owner today stopped at the property to process the damage his vehicle had caused.
"My car was insured for about $20,000, lets see how this goes," the owner said.
Firefighters had to be called in to help remove the taxi, which left a significant trail of destruction.
The 18-year-old has been charged with several offences including theft of motor vehicle, reckless conduct endangering life, driving dangerously and unlicensed driving.
He has been bailed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on August 24.
