Robert Atkins was allegedly kidnapped by a gang of criminals and held under "physical and coercive control" between November 8 and 16 in 2020.
Police allege he was held across three different locations over this time and subjected to a number of assaults.
He was last known to be alive in Adelaide's Mid North on November 16 but police believe he was murdered and buried on that day.
One man will be charged with Atkins murder.
He along with three other men and a woman will be charged over the alleged roles in his kidnapping and assault.
Police said the following charges are expected to be laid tonight:
- A 32-year-old from Christie Downs will be charged with unlawful detention and two counts of causing harm with intent.
- A 43-year-old male at Adelaide Remand Centre will be charged for unlawful detention and one count of causing harm with intent
- A 25-year-old female at Adelaide Women's Prison will be charged with unlawful detention and two counts of causing harm with intent
- A 30-year-old male at Adelaide Remand Centre will be charged with procuring a person to cause harm to another person and procuring the unlawful detention of another person
Detective Brett Featherby said he expected bail will be refused for the group to face court tomorrow.
Featherby said police are still investigating people who have assisted the offenders in disposing of evidence, specifically a firearm and ammunition.
"Today's arrests should give people the comfort to come forward and speak with police," he said.
He warned anyone who helped the offenders dispose of evidence could find themselves in jail for 10 years.
Featherby also said if the group of five are convicted and does not tell police where Atkins' body is, police will look to invoke the no body no parole law.
The investigation into Atkins, Trevor King and Jeffrey Mundy is continuing.
King's body was found in waters near West Lakes, with police alleging his death was staged to look like a suicide.
The missing father is believed to have escaped the site and been tracked down before his murder.
His body also has not been found.
