An unvaccinated Uber driver, aged in his 30s, who was infectious with COVID-19 on the Gold Coast in Queensland for up to 10 days is so sick that health authorities are having difficulties speaking with him and finding out where he has been.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said it was believed the man, who lives by himself in a resort apartment complex in Broadbeach, was in Melbourne on October 10 before travelling to Queensland.

Dr Young said the man because “increasingly unwell” before going to the emergency department at Robina Hospital on Wednesday where he tested positive twice to COVID-19 before being taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital on Wednesday night.

She said contact tracers were working with Uber to find out if he took any passengers while he was infectious.

“We don’t have any [exposure] venues at this stage because, as I said, he is so sick that he is having difficulty communicating with us and difficulty remembering,” Dr Young said.

“It is very hard to work out where he’s been in the community.”

The man has not used the check in app since September 18.

Dr Young urged people who had been in the Broadbeach and Gold Coast areas since October 11 to get tested if they had any symptoms and wear a mask.

“Please don’t wait like this poor gentleman has that he’s so breathless that he can hardly talk to us,” she said.

The man started to develop symptoms on October 11, with his infectious period stretching back to October 9 when he was still in Melbourne.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said there would be no lockdown on the Gold Coast at this stage because the vaccination rates were “quite good” in the area.

Authorities will look at how the man was able to enter the state.

Australia’s three major supermarkets, Woolworths, Coles and Aldi are beginning to roll out vaccine mandates in a major push by some of the country’s largest retailers to protect shoppers and staff from COVID-19.

More than 250,000 workers across the three companies will need to be vaccinated in order to work in the companies stores, distribution centres and support offices as businesses prepare to live with COVID as lockdowns end and Australia begins to reopen.

The move will bring the three companies in line with an increasing number of other corporates who have made the choice to mandate vaccines at their companies, including Telstra, Qantas, BHP, Westpac and CBA.

A significant spike in coronavirus infections in southern NSW has contributed to a jump in today’s case numbers.

Fifty-one of the 372 new local cases reported in NSW today were in the Murrumbidgee Local Health District, which had previously been recording daily figures between 10 and 18 cases over the past week.

Of those 51 cases, 48 were recorded in Albury local government area, six of whom were residents of a private care facility. The other three cases lived in the Edward River and Greater Hume areas.

“A significant amount of current cases are among those aged 12 to 24,” the district said in a statement.

“It is critical those aged 12 and above come forward for vaccination.”

Other areas experienced slight increases in cases on Wednesday.

Eighty of the new cases were from South Western Sydney Local Health District, up from 60 reported on Tuesday. Seventy-four of Wednesday’s cases were in the Hunter New England region, up from 62.

More than half of Wednesday’s cases were recorded outside of metropolitan Sydney.

NSW has recorded one additional COVID-19 death: a man in his 50s from south-eastern Sydney who died at Sutherland Hospital. He had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

As reported earlier, Victoria has reported 2232 new local cases of COVID-19 and 12 deaths.

Victorian Deputy Premier James Merlino says the people who have died are as follows:

  • A man in his 40s;
  • Two men and two women in their 60s;
  • A man and a woman in their 70s;
  • Three women and a man in their 80s; and
  • A woman in her 90s.

There are 141 people in intensive care, 96 of which are on ventilators.

Meanwhile, Mr Merlino announced that 30 vaccination centres across the state will open to walk-up Pfizer appointments with no booking required.

There will also be nine pop-up clinics which will launch with youth mental health organisation Headspace in Collingwood, Frankston, Greensborough, Glenroy and Sunshine this week.

Locations were selected based on analysis of local government areas where vaccination rates are lower, particularly among young people.

While Victoria has hit a 90 per cent vaccination rate for single doses in people aged 16 and over, 10,000 doses are needed in Melbourne’s northern suburbs to bring the local first-dose rate to 85 per cent. About 2000 first doses in Frankton and Dandenong are needed to take those areas to 95 per cent.

The regional first dose rate is 94 per cent, but there are some pockets – including Cann River, Ensay, Sebastopol, Brim, Mildura, Seymour, Halls Gap, Myrtleford, Omeo and Langford – where more could be done to increase rates, the government said.

The state government has also announced that 20 pop-up mental health services are now open and taking referrals for in-person and telehealth appointments.

Mr Merlino congratulated Victoria for reaching its 70 per cent double-dose vaccination target.

“When the clock strikes midnight today, the lockdown is over. In the coming days and weeks I hope everyone enjoys those first reunions with their families, first cricket and netball training with your kids, the first pot and parma at the pub.

“Every single Victorian has earned this … these are truly phenomenal vaccination rates.”

He also announced that Mildura will emerge from lockdown tonight a day earlier than planned, in line with the rest of Victoria.

Queensland has recorded one new local case of COVID-19.

The unvaccinated man was potentially infectious on the Gold Coast for up to 10 days. Today marks the end of Queensland’s 15-day streak of no community cases.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it was believed the man was from interstate.

The Premier and her cabinet fanned across the regions this week after the government announced its plan to reopen Queensland’s borders to fully vaccinated people from interstate hot spots on December 17, even if an 80 per cent vaccine target is not reached.

It will open earlier if an 80 per cent vaccination target is reached sooner.

Any local outbreak in Queensland could undermine plans to reopen borders, as expert modelling which informed the road map assumed “there was no ongoing outbreak at the time of reopening”.

“Results could change if infections are seeded on an already high background level,” the plan reads.

Without any community cases at the time of reopening, daily cases could still hit more than 1000 new infectious by August 2022, according to the modelling.

The ACT’s daily coronavirus numbers are in.

The territory has reported 28 new cases of COVID-19 and eight deaths. Today’s figure is up from yesterday’s tally of 24 new cases.

There are now 21 coronavirus patients in Canberra hospitals. Of those, 10 are in intensive care.

Of those living in the ACT who are aged 12 and over, 83.1 per cent are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

More than 2000 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is due to provide a coronavirus update from 11am AEDT.

While Melburnians won’t be allowed to travel to the regions when lockdown lifts tonight, they will be able to head to areas which have been classified as Greater Melbourne – including the Mornington Peninsula.

From 11.59pm tonight, the travel limit will be scrapped within metropolitan Melbourne.

Angela Cleland, the chief executive of Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism, said those in the region were excited to see the area buzzing again.

“We want to get back to work and we want to be welcoming people back,” she told radio station 3AW.

However, with capacity limits on venues and a patchy forecast for the weekend, Ms Cleland asked people to be patient. Hospitality venues will be allowed to open with 20 customers inside and 50 outside.

“Over the weekend there is going to be some rain, so I’m sure it would be problematic for operators. That’s where we are asking everyone to plan ahead, check the venue, see their capacity... they are much reduced on what they were before.”

A popular tourist magnet, the Mornington Peninsula is considered part of metropolitan Melbourne – rather than regional Victoria – meaning it has been cut off to travellers from both the regions and parts of the city more than 15 kilometres away.

Healesville, another popular tourist destination in the Yarra Ranges local government area, is also classified as metro Melbourne.
