Flooding, damaging winds and even a tornado could hit the midstate Wednesday and Thursday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred hurtle through the area, according to forecasters.
Two to 4 inches of rain could accumulate between Wednesday and Thursday night, but forecasters said some areas could receive more than 5 inches. Brief, isolated tornadoes are possible Wednesday between noon and 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Showers and storms could start at almost any time Wednesday and continue, on and off, throughout the day and night. More than 20 mph winds are possible during the day, forecasters said.
Most of the rain is expected before the end of Thursday night, according to the NWS.
The NWS’s flash flood watch, in effect until late Wednesday, warned rapid runoff from the storms could lead to poor drainage and the rapid rising of local creeks, forecasters said. River flooding is not expected at this time.
A flash flood watch is in effect in the following counties: Adams, Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Cameron, Clearfield, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Elk, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, McKean, Mifflin, Montour, Northern Centre, Northern Clinton, Northern Lycoming, Northumberland, Perry, Potter, Schuylkill, Snyder, Somerset, Southern Centre, Southern Clinton, Southern Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga, Union, Warren and York.
Forecasters recommended keeping an eye on the forecast and being prepared to take action if a flash flood warning is issued for your area.
Not only do we have a flooding risk over the area, but we have a severe thunderstorm risk as well. 2-4" of rain is likely, w/ locally higher amounts possible. Brief isolated tornadoes are possible 12PM - 8PM. Stay alert today and have multiple ways to receive warnings! #PAwx pic.twitter.com/uaQXhQO31f
