Queensland’s new border ban explained - NEWS.com.au

Only a select few people will be allowed to enter Queensland after Annastacia Palaszczuk ordered an ‘immediate’ pause on arrivals.

Annastacia Palaszczuk has ordered a two-week pause on arrivals entering Queensland from Covid-19 hot spots, with the extraordinary measure restricting entry to medical purposes and bereavement matters.

From 12pm on Wednesday, the state will block entry for those who have been given exemptions to relocate to Queensland amid heightened pressure on hotel quarantine facilities, which the Premier said were being “stretched to the limits”.

The new rule applies to those planning to enter from NSW, Victoria and the ACT where growing outbreaks have led to border closures.

“We do not have any room at the moment,” the Premier told reporters.

“Queensland is being loved to death.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the new restriction meant people would need to book a room in hotel quarantine for a specific time before they travelled to Queensland.

The state government cancelled all approvals for travelling into the state, with new arrivals and Queensland residents needing to reapply for a border pass.

Queensland currently has more than 5000 people occupying hotel quarantine sites, with more than 3000 of those allocated to interstate arrivals.

“This has got to stop,” the Premier said.

“Not only are our hotels stressed, but our staff are stressed and this is becoming a risk – a risk seen before and we do not wish to see Delta coming into our community.”

Despite the huge number of arrivals clogging quarantine sites, Queensland recorded zero new local or overseas acquired infections on Wednesday, while the two truck drivers who were recorded as new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday were reclassified.

Ms Palaszczuk said the two drivers, who had travelled into Queensland from NSW and had initially tested positive in the southern state, had now been deemed negative.

Chief health officer Jeannette Young thanked the two drivers, one from the Somerset region and the other from Sunshine Coast, who she said “did everything correctly”.

“Even if they had been cases, they would have been very low risk because of what they’ve been doing,” Dr Young said,

“So a big thank you to them and to all truck drivers.”

Adblock test (Why?)
