A Covid-19 infected man, described as being “public health enemy No. 1” by police, remains on the run as officers plead for him to turn himself in.
Anthony Karam, 27, was told by health authorities that he had contracted Covid-19 on August 14 and was ordered to self-isolate.
But he allegedly failed to do so and provided officials with a fake address.
Despite numerous attempts to find him, Mr Karam remains at large and is wanted for alleged breaches of the public health order.
A warrant for his arrest was issued by NSW Police on Friday as a result.
Mr Karam — described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance with an olive complexion — is known to attended the Greenacre, Wentworth Point and Parramatta areas in Sydney’s west.
Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys on Monday said he wanted Mr Karam to come forward and hand himself in despite police scaling up their operation to find him.
“There was some suggestion it would happen. It didn‘t for whatever reason,” he said.
“There is extensive police tasking around this gentleman.”
Mr Worboys asked anyone who might have seen Mr Karam or who knew where he was to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Chief health officer Kerry Chant issued a public statement on Friday advising that Mr Karam was infectious with Covid-19 and warned the community to avoid all contact with him.
A NSW Police spokesman described him as “public health enemy No. 1”, saying he presented as a danger to the community as he was unwell and coughing when he was last spotted.
It has been reported that police negotiated with Mr Karam to turn himself in, but he allegedly backflipped on the decision.
“He reneged and failed to comply with the arrangements he had made,” the police spokesman told The Daily Telegraph.
Mr Karam is described as being about 170cm tall, with a thin build. He has short dark hair, brown eyes, a beard and a moustache.
