A man has been arrested and charged with the murder of a Sydney man more than 30 years ago in a major cold case breakthrough.
Raymond Keam, 43, was found beaten to death at Alison Park in Randwick 34 years ago. The case has baffled detectives ever since.
But in a major breakthrough, strike force detectives were granted an arrest warrant for a 75-year-old man in Victoria this week.
He was arrested by Victoria Police at a home in Clayton just before 11am Wednesday and was taken to the Melbourne Watch House before he was extradited to NSW and charged with murder at Albury Police Station.
He was refused bail and will appear in Albury Local Court on Thursday.
The development came just months after NSW Police revealed a $1 million reward for information into Mr Keam’s death.
A member of the public made the grim discovery on January 13, 1987, while walking through the parklands early in the morning.
A post-mortem examination later revealed Mr Keam died from severe head injuries likely due to being struck, a coronial inquest determined.
Detectives then spent decades searching for clues.
The homicide squad even revisited the cold case in 2019 and relaunched an investigation with detectives attached to Strike Force Augenaut.
Mr Keam had two children and was a martial arts expert with a black belt.
Earlier reports alleged his pockets had been emptied and the glove box and boot of his car had been ransacked by the time he was found.
One theory police have investigated is that Mr Keam was the victim of a spate of gay hate crimes in the area around that time.
In the late ’80s the Alison Park public toilets were a well-known gay beat where men were often victim of serious assaults or robberies.
When announcing the reward for information in June, Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott alleged Mr Keam’s life was “viciously taken”.
“NSW Police have been working tirelessly to ensure every possible resource available is utilised when reviewing and reinvestigating these cases,” he said.
Mr Keam’s partner Diane Smart described him as “kind and caring”.
“At the time of his death we had been planning out our life together – then it was all ripped away in an instant,” she said.
“I didn’t just lose my partner that night, I lost my life and my future, and we all lost a huge of part of our family.
“Raymond was a bright, strong, smart and generous man who can never be replaced.”
