Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has labelled Daniel Andrews an “absolute clown” after the Victorian Premier unveiled tightened Covid-19 restrictions on Monday.
Andrews brashly voiced his frustration after Melbourne residents congregated together on “pub crawls” with no social distancing while others attended an illegal engagement party in the southeast over the weekend.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton labelled it “absolutely outrageous behaviour” and said the time for discretion was over, vowing that police would be issuing infringements.

Andrews announced that from 11.59pm on Monday people would not be permitted to remove their masks to drink alcoholic beverages in public, and exercising was only allowed with one other person from your household.
Melbourne’s sixth coronavirus lockdown was also extended for another two weeks, and the strict 9pm to 5am curfew would be reimposed on the city as the number of daily cases continues to remain high.
“You will no longer be able to remove your mask to drink a cocktail at a pop-up beer garden on a footpath as part of a pub crawl,” he said.
Footage of the Premier’s press conference circulated on social media and caught the attention of Pietersen.
“Who is this absolute clown?” the former England Test captain wrote on Twitter.
The 41-year-old also blasted Australia’s “horror” vaccine rollout, taking a swipe at Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
“I feel so sorry for all my buddies in Australia. And all Australia!” Pietersen tweeted on Sunday.
“Locking away a nation that wears flip-flops and loves the outdoors, is just WRONG! How’s their PM going? Horror vaccine roll out!”
Victoria recorded 24 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, with one case acquired overseas. Andrews has pleaded with those in the community to get tested if they have the slightest of symptoms.
“Please come forward and get tested as soon as you register those symptoms. In particular, the East St Kilda area but is broader than that suburb. Anyone experiencing symptoms in Port Philip, Glen Eira or Bayside, we need you to come forward and get tested and we need you to come forward today,” he said.
“I don‘t want us to finish up like Sydney where it has fundamentally got away from them, they are not opening and locked in until they get the whole place vaccinated, that will take months,” Mr Andrews said.
“We have an option and opportunity to do it differently and do better than that.”
Pietersen scored 13,797 runs for England over an illustrious 11-year international career, which included four Ashes triumphs and a T20 World Cup victory.
