Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced even more changes for residents of NSW who want to cross the border into the Garden State.
From 6pm Friday, all of New South Wales except for the Cumberland LGA will be reclassified as a Green zone. This border revision means freedom of movement across the Victorian border will be allowed with a permit.
This means the Greater Sydney LGAs of Blacktown City, Burwood, Canada Bay City, Canterbury-Bankstown, Fairfield City, Inner West, Parramatta City and Strathfield Municipality and Liverpool will move from orange to green.
Wollongong and the Blue Mountains will also move to green, leaving Cumberland as the only remaining orange zone.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Mr Andrews hinted there would likely be a big change to his border by the weekend.
“We’ve having discussions with the chief health officer during the week and are confident tomorrow there will be changes to settings and that will mean much greater freedom of movement,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tasmania’s state government have announced their plan to ease travel restrictions with parts Greater Sydney. From Sunday, the ban on travellers from parts Greater Sydney entering Tasmania will be lifted, and 14-day hotel quarantine will no longer apply.
Both announcements comes after Queensland announced residents from Greater Sydney would be allowed in to the Sunshine State from February 1, and South Australia announced they too would be reopening the borders to Greater Sydney from Sunday.
On Friday, Victoria recorded zero new locally acquired COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours.
This marks 23 days since the last case of community transmission. One case was detected in an overseas traveller in hotel quarantine.
NSW reached 12 days straight of no new locally transmitted cases on Friday.
So what is the latest with Australia’s state and territory borders:
QUEENSLAND:
After five weeks of closing the border with NSW, Queensland Premier Annastacia announced on Thursday that all of Greater Sydney will be allowed in to the Sunshine State from 1am on Monday February 1, 2021.
VICTORIA:
Following continued low community transmission and exposure risk in NSW, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced that from 6pm on Friday 29 January the last red zone in New South Wales will now transition to an orange zone, allowing anyone from New South Wales with a permit to enter Victoria.
The Local Government Area (LGA) of Cumberland will transition to an orange zone and all remaining orange zones will transition to green. So anyone in NSW will now be able to enter Victoria providing they have a correct permit.
ACT:
From 3pm on Friday 29 January, the Cumberland Local Government Area (LGA) is no longer considered a COVID-19 affected area, and anyone currently in quarantine in the ACT who has visited Cumberland LGA will no longer be required to quarantine. The Australian Capital Territory is otherwise open to every state and territory.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA:
For the first time in 2021, Sydneysiders will be allowed to travel into South Australia from Sunday January 31. This restriction is provisional on the basis there are no new coronavirus cases in New South Wales. Sydney, Wollongong and Central Coast residents have been banned from entering the state of South Australia since a hard border was imposed on New Year’s Day, while South Australians returning home have had to do a 14-day quarantine on returning to the state from Greater Sydney.
TASMANIA
Tasmania has announced it would lift border restrictions for Greater Sydney from 12.01 on Sunday.
That means people from Blacktown, Burwood, Canada Bay, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Inner West, Liverpool, Parramatta and Strathfield will be able to travel to Tasmania unrestricted, along with other travellers from Sydney.
“Anyone remaining in quarantine in Tasmania who had been in these areas will be free to leave quarantine from 12.01am Sunday,” Tasmania Health said.
“Anyone in Government-designated quarantine will be able to arrange a time for departure with the Government Liaison officer at their accommodation.”
All travellers must apply for a G2G Pass before entering Tasmania.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA:
All of NSW is considered a “low risk” area by the WA government (as opposed to the “very low risk” status given to some other states).
This still means travellers from NSW, including Greater Sydney, must self-quarantine for 14 days at a suitable premises when they arrive in the state. Otherwise, the WA government will appoint an approved facility at the traveller’s expense.
NSW travellers will be health screened when they arrive at Perth Airport and be tested for COVID-19 on day 11 if they are still in WA.
They also must complete a mandatory G2G PASS registration and declaration when travelling to WA.
NORTHERN TERRITORY:
The Northern Territory government still considers some parts of western Sydney to be COVID-19 hot spots. This means travellers who have been in those areas in the previous 14 days before arriving in the territory must undertake 14 days of mandatory hotel quarantine at their own expense.
Those areas are the local government areas of Blacktown, Burwood, Canada Bay, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Inner West, Parramatta and Strathfield.
Everywhere else in Greater Sydney and NSW are not considered hot spots and travellers are good to go – however all interstate arrivals in the NT must complete a border entry form regardless of where they are travelling from.
