GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Nebraska Department of Transportation plows spent all day Monday on Nebraska highways, many having started around midnight. Even after hours of clearing and then re-clearing snow as more fell, the Department of Transportation said they did not have to shut down any highways mostly because not a lot of people were on the roads.
“A lot of times roads will close is because of a crash,” Director of Community and Public Policy Jeni Campana said. “Because there is less people on the road and the people who were out there were traveling slowly, we haven’t had any major incidents.”
While the wind did pick up later in the afternoon, having it not be too strong during the day was a huge help for the plows.
“If we would’ve had wind like the last couple of systems we’ve moved through, there would be absolutely no visibility,” Campana said. “When it’s that bad, it’s very difficult for us to even operate.”
The department will have people out all night and they ask that drivers give them plenty of space to work if they need to be on the roads.
“Our crews will continue to be out there, we will continue to clear those roadways and knock those drifts down if they come,” Campana said. “Be aware of that on your morning commute there’s snow covered roads and some drift out there.”
It highly recommended that people stay home and only be on the roads if they absolutely have to. If you do plan to go anywhere while there is still snow on the ground, give yourself plenty of space between other cars and plows.
