Coronavirus Australia live news: TGA approves Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, WA relaxes border restrictions - ABC News

New Zealand's COVID-19 community transmission case likely came from returned traveller in hotel

New Zealand authorities have confirmed a woman who tested positive for COVID-19 while in the community likely contracted it from another returned traveller on the same floor as her room in her quarantine hotel.

The 56-year-old had recently returned from Europe and had quarantined at Auckland's Pullman Hotel, spending 14 days in quarantine and twice testing negative before returning home on January 13.

She later developed symptoms and tested positive.

New Zealand's COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins said the source was likely to be a fellow returning traveller at the hotel, saying it was "encouraging" the woman's husband and hairdresser had tested negative.

The infection is the South African variant of COVID-19. Contact tracing is continuing.

Mr Hipkins said the woman was in a hotel room close to another COVID-19 case, on the same floor. Public health officials are confident there is no missing link between the two cases.

Over 100 of the 253 returning travellers who left the Pullman Hotel in the infection window had been contacted by Monday morning.
