The Federal Government's $24 million advertising campaign to promote the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine begins rolling out today.
Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer Professor Alison Macmillan says it's providing value information.
"It's important the Government provide reliable and accurate information to all Australians so they're informed about the progress of the vaccine and how they can have confidence it will be safe and effective.
"This campaign, this advertising now, is just a part of the program of providing information who anyone who wants it.
"We are waiting for advice from ATAGI about the vaccine for pregnant women. All we're saying to pregnant women, those thinking about getting pregnant, or breast-feeding, they're not part of our target group right now. We'll make sure we give them the best information so they can make the right choices for themselves and their baby.
"Every day we're talking to states and territories about how we're going to make it work. A lot of the vaccines will be administered by nurses and other health professionals, I'm talking to my colleagues and we're working with all the states and territories.
"This is a joined-up program of work and they're working through the logistics of how they're going to meet all the community needs. We're all working very closely together on this. We don't have a target. I think we can be reassured the uptake we saw of the flu vaccine last year was something we have never seen the likes of before, it was the greatest uptake.
"We know that Australians are great at having vaccines. So, we want to get as many of those people we can get vaccinated, vaccinated. Anyone over 18 at this point is our target. But we haven't got a figure in mind.
"This will be a staged rollout through a number of periods throughout the year. The biggest challenge to some extent with Pfizer is the logistics. We're working with a range of companies to help us with the logistics.
"We're on our way to providing training to make sure all our health professionals have every piece of information they need to deliver the vaccine safely, and making sure we get confidence in the public about when and how they should be able to access this vaccine. At the moment, we're focused on the priority groups, aged care facilities, staff working in aged care and disability, and healthcare workers."
