Three people have been killed after a large wave broke onto a group of people, knocking several of them into the surf at Port Kembla, south of Sydney.
Just after 10pm on Friday night emergency services responded to reports that up to three people had been washed into the surf.
Police have been told by witnesses that the group was standing on rocks near an area known as Hill 60 when a large wave broke onto them.
Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District attended, with the assistance of the Marine Area Command, NSW Ambulance, rescue helicopters and local lifeguards.
Three people were confirmed dead at the scene. Emergency services were continuing a search of the area late on Friday night for other people who may have been in the water.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Lake Illawarra police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
