"I can't say that I baked them all myself," she said, adding, "I wanted to give everybody a cookie as a small thank you for your service and your families' service."

More than 25,000 National Guard troops were deployed to assist in protecting the U.S. Capitol for potential security concerns ahead of Wednesday's inauguration of Biden.

The unprecedented precautions ensured the new U.S. president and Vice President Kamala Harris took office free of incident in a ceremony outside the U.S. Capitol, two weeks to the day after a mob attacked the building in a failed attempt to keep Congress from certifying their victory.

Video Transcript

- The floor is yours.

JILL BIDEN: Thank you. I just wanted to come today to say thank you to all of you for keeping me and my family safe. And I know that you've left your home states. The Bidens are a National Guard family. Our son Beau was Delaware Army National Guard. He served for a year in Iraq in 2008-2009, so I'm a National Guard mom.

And when I saw, you know, the great job that you've done over the inauguration and all that you've done, and you've left your home states and you've come here to protect us, I just wanted to say thank you from President Biden, and from the whole-- the entire Biden family.

So the White House baked you some chocolate chip cookies. I can't say that I baked them all myself, but so I wanted to give everybody a cookie as just a small thank you for your service and your families' service, and all that you've done for our nation and tell you that I truly appreciate you, all they can do.

- All right. Friends, fall out and close it up. We're going to do a group photo, huh?

- Huh. Bring it in.

- Bring it in.

- Bring it in.

JILL BIDEN: Ask him to take another one.

- Awesome.

JILL BIDEN: Could we have another one, and she's going to-- I feel like I should get down.

- No, no, no, no.

- And if you want to, ma'am, I can give you my hat or my jacket for you. Poor man kneels down.
