Who will win the Melbourne Cup and why: experts reveal their tips - The Age

1. Tiger Moth
2. Verry Elleegant
3. Russian Camelot
If the trick to winning a Cup is beating the handicapper, then Tiger Moth looks a great chance. The northern hemisphere-bred three-year-old has a similar profile to past winners Rekindling and Cross Counter, and Aidan O'Brien is desperate to win his first Cup. Verry Elleegant and Russian Camelot are the two best locals, while Charlie Fellowes has set Prince Of Arran to peak in this year's Cup.

1. Surprise Baby
2. Anthony Van Dyck
3. Prince Of Arran
From the moment they passed the post in last year's Melbourne Cup crawl, Surprise Baby was set for the 2020 race. If it wasn't for the farcical tempo as he zipped home into fifth from near last, he might already be a Cup winner. This year's race is much deeper, but he'll stay, has a turn of foot and has dodged the handicapper for the last 12 months. It's his time.

2. Prince Of Arran
3. Sir Dragonet
There is plenty to like about Russian Camelot. Trained by last year's Cup winner, his lead up form in the top weight-for-age races has been excellent, especially the Cox Plate where he was beaten by two that had softer runs. Jockey Damien Oliver on board is a big tick, and gate 16 will help rather than hinder. There is a slight query regarding the firm ground. Prince Of Arran has a bit of Red Cadeaux about him, and Sir Dragonet cannot be dismissed after winning a stamina test in Cox Plate. Steel Prince the best roughie.

3. Tiger Moth
The best Australian horse can beat the best international, with an improving northern hemisphere three-year-old in third place. Russian Camelot is a class horse and should relish the step up in trip. Anthony Van Dyck ran a brilliant race in the Caulfield Cup but might find the weight a burden, while Tiger Moth is an improver with a light weight. Ashrun will stay the trip and his win in the Hotham on Saturday shows him to be peaking at the right time.

3. Finche
As an English Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck has earned his top weight and his Caulfield Cup second from near last shows he has adapted to Australian racing. Stablemate Tiger Moth is untapped while Finche has performed well in the past two Cups.

1. Russian Camelot
2. Anthony Van Dyck
3. Prince of Arran
Russian Camelot fits the profile of a winner with class, staying ability and a reasonable weight. He impressed in the Cox Plate when forced to work from the wide barrier and is improving every run. Despite the huge weight it was impossible to ignore Anthony Van Dyck's Caulfield Cup run, as it showed he had settled in well, was fit and would cope with the pattern of racing, while Prince of Arran just always competes and although I'm not sure he can win I'm sure he can run in the top five.

Chris Roots
1. Avilius
2.Verry Elleegant
3. Tiger Moth
Every time James Cummings has targeted a race with Avilius since he came to Australia he hasn't let him down. The Melbourne Cup has been the goal this spring and every run he has got better. He has a touch of class and dash at the end of his race that could produce a Melbourne Cup blow out.
