US election live updates: Donald Trump appears in public as Democrats' Senate chances take another blow in North Carolina - ABC News

Peter Marsh under your comments Why should Trump concede? you are making out that I have lost. And then you say the first official results are Delaware??? Oh you sound like a democart...putting the cart before the horse. Official results are official. Media results are opinions. THIS IS NOT OVER YET!

-Mr Trump

Hey Mr Trump. Nice of you to visit the blog, I know it's a bit of a busy time. You're not the only one who's asked about this, so let's explain how it works.

In the US, there are basically 51 separate elections that happen on the same day. There is no national commission to oversee them, or tell everybody who has won. Because of this, the media is the one who "calls" the election. It's been this way since 1848, when the Associated Press (AP) declared Zachary Taylor had won that election.

The other reason that this happens is because of the Electoral College. It's a long, drawn out process that doesn't officially end until the new Congress counts the Electoral College votes in early January.  But we know who has won well before that day. Here's how AP (which the ABC uses) explains how it makes a call:

"AP uses a 50-state network of freelance "stringers" who collect votes from county clerks and other local officials. Other AP journalists gather results from state or county websites, as well as via electronic data feeds from states.

"News organizations around the world that take AP use this count to report on results. Meanwhile, state-based analysts and editors on AP's Decision Desk look at that vote count — combined with research including demographic data, voting history and statistics about advance voting — to declare winners."

We use the term "set to" or "projected" to win because we're respecting the fact that those official processes still have to play out. But that doesn't mean that the result is in doubt. When decision desks across the US make a call, they do it with 99.5 per cent certainty (that takes recounts and lawsuits into account, by the way). And all of the major ones, including the conservative Fox News, have called this election for Joe Biden.

There's nothing unusual about the media calling this election before the results are certified. It's exactly what happened when Donald Trump was elected in 2016. It was legitimate when they did it for Trump then and it's legitimate here in 2020 as well.
