A gunman has been arrested after being holed up inside a house in southwest Western Australia for more than 11 hours.
WA Police confirmed just after 5am AWST on Monday that an active firearm incident in Margaret River had been resolved and a man in his 50s had been taken into custody.
Police said the area was now safe and neighbouring residents could return to their homes.
The siege started when multiple gun shots were heard at a home in McKeown Place, Margaret River about 6pm AWST on Sunday.
What followed was a tense standoff as WA Police tried to negotiate with the gunman throughout the night.
Heavily armed officers swarmed the quiet neighbourhood and remained there overnight as they tried to convince the man to surrender.
Just after 4am AWST, police said there was no one being held hostage and there was no risk to public safety.
Homes next to the property were evacuated, while other nearby residents were told to remain inside their homes until further notice.
Police earlier urged the Margaret River community to avoid the area between McKeown Place, Bovell Avenue, William Place and Georgette Drive, including the park area within that boundary, until the incident had been resolved.
The area has now been declared safe and residents are allowed to return home.
