‘Got part of my body back’: Pensioner teary after reunited with stolen scooter - NEWS.com.au

An elderly pensioner has issued a teary and heartfelt thanks to those who helped reunite him with his mobility scooter after it was stolen from outside his home on Sunday.

“I was lost without it. It’s like I got part of my body back,” Laurie Adams told reporters.

“I’m very happy and I just want to thank everybody for what they did for me.

“How do I thank someone who helped get part of my body back … I get really emotional. I can’t help it.”

A 36-year-old man was arrested and charged on Tuesday night, accused of stealing the 82-year-old’s scooter from outside his Ultimo home on Sunday afternoon.

He was taken to Maroubra police station and charged with larceny and possessing or using a prohibited weapon.

Mr Adams said he was taken back by people’s kindness.

“I’m going to have big troubles later on because everyone wants to get me a scooter, but what would I do with six scooters,” he joked.

“I’ve been inundated with phone calls. I get so emotional.”

He said he would spend some time on Wednesday just sitting on his scooter and talking to it alongside his pet bird.

When asked what he would say to the man who allegedly stole his scooter, Mr Adams said he would offer kindness.

“You don’t go around pinching someone who has a disability’s scooter unless you have a problem,” he said.

“I want to help him.”

Sydney City Police Area Commander, Acting Superintendent Paul Dunstan said it brought so much happiness to the police to be able to help Mr Adams.

“Our investigators have been inundated with calls from members of the public which led to an arrest last night,” he said.

“This is a fine example of the community coming together to assist police in this investigation, enabling us to (put) someone before the court.”

The accused has been refused bail and is expected to appear in Waverley Local Court on Wednesday.
