Eta will re-strengthen into a tropical storm before it moves over Cuba on track to enter the Gulf of Mexico early next week, National Hurricane Center forecasters said Friday afternoon.
The former hurricane's threat to Louisiana was not known, but Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards began warning residents to keep watch.
Up to 40 inches of rain could fall in parts of Nicaragua and Honduras.
"It's time for people to put their eyes on Hurricane Eta because that hurricane is going to move through the Caribbean, across Cuba and is expected to be in the northern Gulf some time in the middle or end of next week," Edwards said Thursday.
Eta's winds measured 35 mph, making it a tropical depression, on Friday at about 3 p.m. Wind speed was expected to rise to 40 mph, tropical storm status, by Friday night, and could reach 65 mph in the following days.
At mid-afternoon the storm was about 115 miles east of Belize City and 375 miles west southwest of Grand Cayman. It was moving northeasterly at 7 mph.

Forecasters anticipate Eta reaching the Cayman Islands on Saturday and moving over Cuba that night or Sunday.
