Coronavirus Australia live news: No room under arrivals cap for foreign students to return to Australia - ABC News

No room for international students to return under current arrivals cap

Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan says there's currently no room under the country's international arrivals cap to deal with bringing foreign students into Australia.

State and territory governments have been asked to submit plans for how university campuses could be used to quarantine students, and take pressure off the hotel quarantine system.

Mr Tehan's told Sky News the current priority is getting Australian citizens and permanent residents back into the country.

"Once there is obviously room for international students, then what we've been saying to state and territory governments is work with the university sector to see, well, what is the best way that we bring international students in," Mr Tehan said.

Universities have struggled through the coronavirus pandemic, having lost access to the lucrative international student market.

Mr Tehan also told Sky News that job losses in the university sector stands at "around the 10 to 12,000 mark" but that the losses are comparable to other sectors.

"If you look, and take an assessment, with comparable industries, it's actually below the job losses we've seen in other industries more broadly across the nation."
