Maddie Quarles, a redshirt sophomore with the Maroon and Gold, had a breakout campaign on vault during the 2020 season. Quarles earned second team honors for her performance. Spending most of her time as the anchor of the vault lineup, Quarles excelled on the event, posting a 9.800 or higher in eight out of the nine meets this season. In the final meet of the season, the redshirt freshman notched a career-high 9.925. She won two vault titles.GopherSports caught up with Maddie this week to reflect on her first official collegiate gymnastics season, look forward to the coming season and learn about her horseback riding hobby.
GopherSports: How has it felt to be back in Peik with your teammates?
Maddie Quarles: Being back at Peik has never felt better! Getting the opportunity through these crazy times to be back with my teammates and get to train each day has felt really great.
GS: What did you do over the summer to train and improve your skills?
MQ: I trained back at my club gym, Twin City Twisters with Abbie Nylin and finished my rehab every day before getting to train back with the team.
GS: What are you most looking forward to this season?
MQ: I'm looking forward to getting to compete alongside my incredible teammates and getting to make memories throughout the whole season.
GS: How has the team continued to improve and use the momentum from the success of last season?
MQ: Everyone worked super hard this summer and once we were all back together, we picked up right where we left off.
GS: How are the underclassmen contributing to the team?
MQ: The freshmen are doing incredible and have been fitting right into the team. They have been training with us like they've been here for years!
GS: What are most proud of from your career so far?
MQ: I'm most proud of getting back into gymnastics after being out for so long due to injury and getting some incredible season high scores!
GS: What is it like to represent your home state?
MQ: It's incredible to compete in front of all my family when they come and to be back home where I grew up.
GS: When did you start your hobby of horseback riding and what are your favorite memories from competing with horses?
MQ: I started riding horses when I was about two years old with my aunt. I've done it ever since then and have had horses my whole entire life. I used to compete from age 6 until I was 17. My favorite memories were just getting to ride and compete with my aunt throughout the years and spending my days out riding. That is definitely something I miss being at school.
