Richmond defeats Geelong in AFL grand final at the Gabba to cement status as one of greatest-ever teams - ABC News

Richmond has beaten Geelong by 31 points in the AFL grand final in Brisbane to clinch a third premiership in four years.

Three weeks after being defeated in the qualifying final by the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba, Richmond cemented its claims as one of the greatest teams of all time with a 12.9 (81) to 7.8 (50) victory over the Cats at the same venue.

The victory brings a 13th premiership for Richmond, while Dustin Martin made history, winning his third Norm Smith Medal for best on ground.

The Tigers showed their steel in the second half, kicking four goals to one in the third quarter and nine goals to two after half-time.

The game was only minutes old when the first key moment arrived.

Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield and Richmond's Nick Vlaustuin went in to contest the ball, Dangerfield punched the ball free and then connected with Vlaustuin, who hit the ground and was out cold.

As play went on, Gary Ablett got the ball and tried to handball it clear as he was tackled to the ground by Tigers' captain Trent Cotchin.

Ablett got up grimacing. He came off cradling his left shoulder and went down the race.

Meanwhile play was stopped for several minutes as the stretcher came on and Vlaustuin was taken off the ground in a neck brace.

When play resumed, it was an energetic game with plenty of action, if not too many goals.

Geelong missed early chances, before Dion Prestia kicked the opener for Richmond after a Geelong turnover in midfield.

Minutes later Kamdyn McIntosh booted another from distance, and the Tigers looked on top.

Ablett ran back onto the ground to a tumultuous reception from Cats fans. A couple of minutes later Cam Guthrie — who had been involved in everything for Geelong — took a strong mark on 50 and converted.

It was a fierce contest around the ground, and the Cats managed to hit the front just before quarter-time when Geelong went direct inside 50, Mitch Duncan marked in the right forward pocket and then went back and drilled the set shot.

Early in the second quarter the trend continued. Geelong had the momentum, they went forward, and Cotchin infringed Dangerfield in the left forward pocket.

Dangerfield kicked the goal to give Geelong a seven-point lead.

They were well on top, and further goals to Sam Menegola and Tom Hawkins got the margin out beyond 20 points.

Dustin Martin gave his team a much needed boost when he kicked a goal at the 24-minute mark, and the Tigers went in at the break trailing 5.5 (35) to 3.2 (20).

More to come.
