Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Federal Government would work better with Queensland if Deb Frecklington wins election - ABC News

The Prime Minister says he would work better with LNP leader Deb Frecklington as premier, but stopped short of guaranteeing funding for the LNP's signature policy.

Just five days into the official campaign, Scott Morrison made his first appearance on the hustings, touring a steel factory on the Gold Coast in the marginal LNP electorate of Currumbin.

By far, the LNP's biggest election promise is a mammoth $33 billion, 15-year plan to expand the Bruce Highway.

Asked whether he would stump up the Federal Government's share of the funding, Mr Morrison said he was looking at it.

"We are getting ready to ensure we understand the full costs and what's involved," he said.

"But what I stress again is that we are building projects on the Bruce, from Brisbane to Cairns. That's happening now."

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick said without federal funding, the LNP's proposal could not proceed.

"Deb Frecklington's Bruce Highway plan is a highway hoax", he said.

Mr Morrison and the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk have worked together as part of the National Cabinet process during the COVID crisis, but their relationship has also descended into bitter disagreements at times over border closures, with Ms Palaszczuk accusing the PM of bullying.

Mr Morrison said he would "get things done" if Ms Frecklington is elected premier on October 31.

"I'm not looking to pick fights with anyone in Queensland. I'm just looking to get things done," he said.

"If Deb Frecklington's elected, then I tell you what, it's really going to change things up here in Queensland because we're going to be able to get moving," he said.

Mr Morrison was able to come to the sunshine state without quarantining because he has spent the last two weeks in the ACT, which Queensland no longer considers a COVID-19 hot spot.

His visit was as much to support Ms Frecklington as it was to spruik the Coalition's federal budget, including tax cuts, which Mr Morrison said would benefit 2.3 million Queenslanders.

He hinted that he would remain in Queensland for a few days.

His popularity with Queensland voters is hoped to rub off on Ms Frecklington — while there's no clear winner yet for a party, her personal approval rating isn't as high as the Premier's.

Ms Palaszczuk said she was not fazed by Mr Morrison's presence.

"Queenslanders are smart people. They know it's a state election. It's not a federal election," she said.

Ms Palaszczuk campaigned on the beaches of Currumbin today, pledging $27 million over four years for the Surf Life Saving Association.

The LNP promised a $120 million upgrade to an interchange on the M1 on the northern Gold Coast.
