Jorge Masvidal took the MMA universe by storm as he stepped in to face Kamaru Usman on a meager six-day notice.
While fight fans are excited about witnessing the bitter rivalry between the two finally play out inside the Octagon, many believe that ‘Gamebred’ might not be able to get ready on time. Not only did he accept the fight on an extremely short notice, but he also needed to travel across the world at the same time and begin making weight for the title shot.
However, it appears that the BMF was preparing all along for a situation just like this. In an interview with MMA Junkie, he revealed that he has been training throughout the pandemic in order to stay prepared for any contingencies. And all within the confines of his house. He said,
“I know that I’m training every day. And I know that not everybody’s training every day. Especially a lot of the guys in my weight division. Gyms are closed down, people don’t have sparring partners. Thank goodness that my head coach… for the longest time, lives with me. It’s not because of quarantine. It’s because he lives with me.”
Jorge Masvidal reveals that his coach was the first thing he had in mind while buying his house
Jorge really did best the pandemic in terms of training capability. Instead of going to the gym to his coach, he made his long time boxing coach, Paulino Hernandez, his housemate!
However, this is not a recent happening. Jorge said that before he bought his house in Miami, he ensured that it had enough space for his coach to live in. He said,
“I brought him with me when I was able to get this house. I said I’m going to train always, every day, all day, no excuses. The first thing I’m going to do is make sure I have enough space for my coach to come live with me. So, what did my coach do? He came and lived with me.”
Thus, Jorge probably had the best deal out there to stay sharp during the pandemic. He said that his training occurs at the most random times of the day and shared that it has helped him stay mentally sharp.
“We work out literally at all times of the day. If I’m up at one o’clock in the morning, we might get in 30 [to] 40 minutes of pads. And just one technique in practice. So, from a mental place, I’m at a very good place.”
Looks like the short-term agreement does not really affect Jorge, as he has been preparing for war all the time. Well, as they say, the more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war!
