Dying of cancer, Rebecca's wedding day just can't wait

For six months, Rebecca Gallo practically lived in her doctor’s office. She was trying to find out why she was always bloated, losing weight and why there was unexplained pain around her abdomen.

Around Anzac Day last year, she finally got her answer: she was suffering from a rare subtype of ovarian cancer – and it was stage four.

Rebecca Gallo and her partner Ryan Hurst on the day they got engaged.

Rebecca Gallo and her partner Ryan Hurst on the day they got engaged.

“It was very left of field,” the now 26-year-old Kinglake local says.

“I’ve always been in very good health and had no reason to suspect the worst. And, as is the case particularly with ovarian cancer, the side effects can be explained away by other things.”

At the time, she and her partner Ryan Hurst, 28, had been together for a little longer than three years and were on the brink of engagement. But as the cancer treatment started, thoughts of a wedding were pushed aside in a bid to save Ms Gallo’s life.

“We were ready to get engaged for a long time, but with everything that happened last year it just didn’t end up happening,” Ms Gallo says.

“And then COVID hit.”

Major focus on making sure people with COVID-19 stay home

There's a major focus on ensuring Victorians are isolating at home after testing positive.

Premier Daniel Andrews said earlier that one in four people are ignoring this requirement when checked by door-knockers.

Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton adds that some are found to not be at home twice in one day.

There's a follow-up about whether those in isolation should be permitted to exercise, as is currently allowed.

Professor Sutton says it's more about people going to work while infectious.

NZ style lockdown still not the right fit says Sutton

The idea of introducing a "New Zealand-style" hard lockdown in Victoria has been a repeated question at the daily briefings.

Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton has consistently said it wouldn't necessarily get the same results in Victoria.

"It was different circumstances at a different time," he says.

"We've got a lot more community transmission, bigger numbers."

94 new cases of 'mystery' community transmission

There are 94 more cases of community transmission today in Victoria, according to Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton.

That's the number of "mystery cases" with no known source being watched very closely by authorities.

However Dr Sutton says it's still a minority of daily cases.

"With the majority being known close contacts, known outbreaks and clusters," he says.

Premier reaches out to Islamic leaders ahead of Eid al-Adha festival

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says he has reached out to Islamic leaders about the Eid al-Adha festival taking place.

He has recorded some messages that will be going out to the Islamic community urging them to maintain social distancing.

"It already looks different and it needs to continue to look different. I am very confident that the Islamic community will step up."

Why isn't 1300 cases in two days enough evidence for more restrictions?

A question from the media that many Victorians will be asking today: "1,300 cases in two days, isn't that enough evidence to say what we're doing is not working and it is time for greater action?"

Premier Daniel Andrews responds by saying some people will think the measures were too strict, others too light.

"There will always be different views and there will always be different opinions on when certain things should happen. That is not unhealthy but I think following advice and following advice that is based on fact and data, not hunches, is a very important thing," he says

'Beyonce' tower site in CBD shut after dozen workers test positive

The "Beyonce" tower, a skyscraper construction site in Melbourne's CBD, is in lockdown after a dozen cases of COVID-19 were confirmed among building workers.

The outbreak at the 780-apartment Premier Tower site on Spencer Street has prompted construction giant Multiplex to immediately shut work down for a full "hospital grade" clean.

Up to 20 close or casual contacts with other workers have been identified, a statement issued by the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union said.

"All workers identified as being in close and casual contact with the confirmed cases were immediately sent home and ordered to get tested and to self-isolate until they received their test results," the CFMEU said.

Australia's construction industry, which employs tens of thousands of workers, has managed to stay open during the pandemic but a full scale outbreak on a large city site may trigger stronger restrictions on activity, particularly in Victoria.

Premier in tense exchange over security industry

A fairly tense exchange in today's briefing between Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and a reporter who introduced themselves as being from 60 Minutes.

There were repeated questions about the issues with hotel quarantine that has led to this second wave.

Mr Andrews kept referring the reporter to the inquiry that is under way.

"The answers are to be provided by the retired judge and judicial inquiry," he said.

"That is the point that I'm trying as politely as I possibly can to make."
