Police have not found evidence a two-year-old girl was sexually assaulted following an investigation and a forensic examination of a play centre in Sydney's west.
On Sunday, emergency services were called to the Lollipop's Playland & Cafe at Penrith before 12.30pm after the girl was found in a distressed state in a storeroom.
The girl's mother, staff and other parents had been trying to find the lost child for about 20 minutes when another child located her and alerted the girl's mother.
It was initially thought the girl was sexually assaulted by an unknown man.
A statement from police on Wednesday said: "Following a review of CCTV footage and our forensic examination of the location, there is no evidence at this time to confirm initial reports that a sexual offence has occurred within the play centre."
It is understood CCTV footage does not show anyone entering or leaving the storeroom while the girl was in the area.
Clothing has been taken for DNA testing and final results are expected next week.
On Monday, NSW Police commander of the child abuse and sex crimes squad Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec said investigators were keeping an open mind about the situation.
"Due to the tender age of the child ... we're going to keep a very open mind and treat this as its worst," he said.
Inquiries are continuing.
