Police are investigating after a man was killed in a fight at a pub in Canberra last night.
Officers arrived at the Kingston Hotel in Griffith in Canberra’s inner south about 9.15pm on Sunday where ACT Ambulance Service paramedics were already attending to an injured 44-year-old man.
Despite efforts to revive the man he died a short time later at the hotel.
Detective Acting Superintendent Matt Reynolds said today there were no weapons or glass used during the fatal altercation. Police are still in the process of forensically investigating the victim’s injuries, Det Supt Reynolds said.
Police established a crime scene last night and are now investigating the circumstances of the incident. They remained at the scene overnight and throughout the morning, ACT Police said in a statement today.
ACT Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers or use the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
Detectives from the ACT Police are reviewing a large amount of CCTV and have interviewed a number of witnesses, according to reports.
“Obviously, this is a very distressing incident for members of the public and staff and we are still seeking anyone who has further information,” Det Supt Reynolds said today.
“We could speculate that there probably was alcohol involved, but we are unable to be sure of the exact cause of the incident at this stage.”
He said police were inquiring whether the men involved in the altercation knew one another, and whether they’d come from interstate.
About 20 to 30 other patrons were in the pub at the time of the fight, according to The Riot Act.
No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
