Price changes to public transport fares

The NSW Government is set to introduce major changes to public transport fares today, with big incentives to travel off-peak and some price hikes also expected.

Commuters travelling up to 3 kilometres on a light rail or bus can expect to pay about a dollar more, but off-peak commuters will see a reduction in fares.

The changes follow a recommendation by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal made earlier this year.

The fare changes are expected to kick in on July 1 with the NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance scheduled to provide more details later this morning.

Fifteen new charges have been laid against a privately employed paramedic accused of sexually touching women while giving first aid at a railway station last year.

A Jannali man, 38, was arrested in August after reports two women at Redfern train station were sexually abused while receiving first aid.

After an investigation, the man was charged over 15 additional sexual-touching and indecent-assault incidents related to seven new alleged victims between November 2018 and July 2019.

The man, who was stood down from his role, will appear in court today.

The NSW Rugby League says it is looking forward to resuming competitions at all levels from next month as coronavirus restrictions lift.

Chief executive David Trodden said while the NRL had been running, other levels haven't been allowed to play because of COVID-19.

He said plans were underway for the return of the league's senior competitions, including the NSW women's premiership.

Mr Trodden said the Try League program — for children aged between four and nine from culturally diverse backgrounds — would also resume in Sydney's west and south-west.

Driver charged over motorcyclist death

A ute driver involved in a crash at Rouse Hill that led to the death of a motorcyclist will face court today, charged with dangerous and negligent driving.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Windsor and Schofield roads at about 5:45pm after reports of a collision.

A 28-year-old motorcyclist from Bligh Park died at the scene and the ute driver, 37, was later taken to Quakers Hill police station and charged.

Police alleged the crash occurred after the driver drove through a red light.

NSW police are applying to the Supreme Court to stop a Black Lives Matter protest in Wollongong tomorrow.

The coordinators of the march said they had been told if the injunction was successful, police would also demand the organisers cover their legal costs.

Police were notified of the march, but did not authorise it because it breached COVID-19 rules on outdoor gatherings of 20 people — but protestors they would rally anyway.

"The protest has to go ahead, we have to keep taking a stand on this issue until there is justice," organiser Jasmine Duff said.

NSW Health is urging people in southern Sydney and the Illawarra to get tested for COVID-19 if they feel unwell.

The previous two community transmissions involved Laguna Street Public school in Caringbah, in the Sutherland Shire, and a 20-year-old man in the Illawarra region.

Christine Selvey from NSW Health said while there were no cases of community transmission since Monday, the virus could still be circulating in the community.

There was a record turnout for testing across the state on Wednesday, with more than 17,000 people coming forward to get tested.
