The NSW Government has announced another tranche of downgraded coronavirus restrictions, with the 50-person limit on pubs and restaurants to be lifted next month.
Key points:
- The 50-person limit on indoor venues will be lifted next month
- Outdoor venues of up to 40,000 capacity will be able to fill up to 25 per cent
- It comes as NSW has its first locally acquired COVID-19 case in weeks
From July 1, venues will be able to operate without capacity limits other than accommodating one person per four square metres.
Outdoor venues with a capacity of up to 40,000 people can seat a quarter of that, a move to free restrictions on concerts and sporting events flagged by Scott Morrison after Friday's National Cabinet meeting.
The State Government said closures would remain in place for nightclubs and music festivals but could be eased in August if locally acquired transmission rates remain low.
The announcement follows further easing of restrictions this weekend, with households now able to host up to 20 guests, and gyms and food courts reopening, provided they can adhere to the four-square metre rule.
Community centres, markets, tattoo and massage parlours, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, betting agencies and holiday homes are also permitted to open from this weekend with restrictions.
The NSW Government is also to relax rules on granting new liquor licences in the Sydney CBD in what it says is a move to reinvigorate Sydney's nightlife.
Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said the changes would further boost business once coronavirus restrictions ease.
"These changes will kick-start a new era in Sydney's 24-hour economy," he said.
A freeze on new licences has been in place across the CBD and Kings Cross as a tactic to tackle alcohol-related harm.
"In some CBD locations, this will be the first time in 11 years that applications for new venues will be considered."
The latest announcements come, however, as NSW recorded its first locally acquired case since late May, in a man in his 20s.
The case was being investigated and health authorities have reached out to all close contacts for the man.
Four new cases have been recorded in the latest 24-hour reporting period, including the man, two travellers in hotel quarantine and a previously reported case from Rose Bay Public School.
Another outbreak emerged from a Sydney school yesterday, with Laguana Street Public School in Caringbah South closing for two weeks after a staff member tested positive.
Health authorities said the staff member had close contact with most of the school's 455 students, who have now been asked to self-isolate for 14 days.
Students will receive home learning during this time, authorities said.
Government schools in NSW returned to full-time, face-to-face learning on May 25, after nearly two months of online learning due to the coronavirus lockdown.
