Sydney childcare centre closes after four-year-old tests positive to coronavirus - The Age

She urged people relaxation of social distancing rules was "not a holiday", to "respect the rules" and consider the risks of coming into contact with others during the coronavirus pandemic

"I want to stress it's very, very important for as [many] people as possible to come forward and get tested," Ms Berejiklian said.

"We want to see that number average out to at least 8000 a day. If you have the slightest sniffle, a scratchy throat, if you work with vulnerable people anywhere in the state, please come forward and get tested."

On Tuesday, NSW announced that two adults would be allowed to visit another household in the state from Friday. There is no geographical constraint on how far away the visits can be, however, the Premier said on Wednesday morning that existing reasons to leave the home still remain.

"The reasons why we're allowing people to come into other people's households is to extend the definition of care," Ms Berejiklian said.

"It's to reduce social isolation and it's to improve mental health because we know that so many people in our community have been literally locked up in their homes for weeks on end."

"The fact you can visit another person's household is an extension of the definition of care.

"I want to make that point very specifically. I don't want to be in a situation where NSW has to go backwards."

Ms Berejiklian said she personally would be visiting her elderly parents outside their home.

"I'm in contact with a lot of people and I don't want to put them at risk," she said.

Meanwhile, the state government has contacted the federal Minister for Aged Care to express their disappointment with the lack of communication given to relatives of residents at Newmarch House, Ms Berejiklian said on Wednesday morning.

There have been 54 coronavirus cases linked to Newmarch House, which is within Anglicare's Caddens Village, near Penrith.

Eleven residents who tested positive for coronavirus have now died, including four within the past 24 hours.

"The number of deaths yesterday was devastating," Ms Berejiklian said.

"It reminds us how contagious this virus is and how it attacks the elderly and vulnerable in particular. Our hearts go out to all the families of the people who have succumbed to the disease and all the families who are really worried about their loved ones."

Family members of residents have written an open letter to Anglicare chief executive officer Grant Millard, calling for better communication methods, as well as asking for more information about two additional cases of coronavirus among staff this week.

Speaking to reporters this morning, the state's Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said of the two staff members who tested positive this week, one was in self-isolation and one was working at the facility while infectious, although they were wearing personal protective equipment.
