The majority of returning West Australians on a flight to Perth from South Africa that arrives tomorrow will be taken to Rottnest Island for quarantine.
About 257 people will fly into WA from Johannesburg at 9am tomorrow where they will undergo health assessments.
Unhealthy flyers will be taken to Perth hotels while the remainder will be taken to Rottnest.
It comes as WA recorded one COVID-19 case overnight taking the state total to 550.
The 80-year-old woman from Perth is the wife of a former passenger on the Costa Victoria cruise ship and is currently in hospital.
There were nine more recoveries, bringing the total number of people to beat the virus up to 495.
There are currently 47 active cases including 28 West Australians, 17 people who were on the Artania cruise ship and two interstate Australians.
Sixteen people are in hospital including four in an intensive care unit.
Premier Mark McGowan said many of the travellers on the South African flight were families.
“All passengers will be placed in quarantine for mandatory 14-day isolation period,” he said.
“No passengers will be committed to avoiding the quarantine without a police exemption.
“If their health condition is good they’ll be going back out to the island.
“All passengers presenting with complex health needs or those who are unwell or immunocompromised are expected to remain in CBD hotels where they will be close to hospitals.”
Some elective surgery is also set to restart this week after 3000 operations were put on hold in the past few weeks.
The Premier said there would be a gradual ramp-up of elective surgery.
“We’re now scheduling a quarter of the usual category two surgeries ... 330 (extra) patients per week can go to surgery,” Mr McGowan said.
“It includes endoscopies, colonoscopies, knee replacements, orthopaedic surgery, some of the reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy, cataract surgery and the like.”
WA has just received an extra $4 million of personal protective equipment, including hundreds of thousands of masks and face shields.
A flight from Kuala Lumpur arrived in Perth last night with about 80 to 90 passengers, according to the Premier.
“My advice is no passengers went to Rottnest from that flight,” he said.
“Some of them may well be quarantining here prior to going east, it’s generally those people we don’t put at Rottnest.”
Two more flights, from India and France, are expected later this week.
“The Air France flight if it does come, the broad advice I have … is it will be a logistics flight if you like,” Mr McGowan said.
“The India flight may be coming in later this week.”
Mr McGowan said he would be annoyed if anyone on the flights had gone on a holiday or were living abroad with the ability to come home earlier but had not.
He also thanked all of the staff at WA’s public schools, as well as parents and families, ahead of the start of the term tomorrow.
“We’ve got a soft start to schooling in Term 2; (it’s) a very cautious and considered approach,” he said.
