A large-scale search resumed in Victoria’s High Country on Sunday after a man went missing at Dinner Plain.
Christos, 70, was last seen at 2.45pm on Friday on Big Muster Drive, Dinner Plain, when he went for a walk to look for emus that had been reported in the area.
The Melbourne man was wearing a long-sleeve top, long-sleeve jumper, pants and Crocs.
Police Inspector Paul Hargreaves said the man might have been injured while walking and officers were hoping to speak to a member of the public who told an SES volunteer at 5pm on Friday they had seen someone of Christos’ description.
Hargreaves said Christos and his wife had been holidaying in the alpine region for three days before he went missing and that the 70-year-old was “very fit for his age”.
With snow expected in coming days, the search is becoming more urgent.
“We are thinking that maybe he’s come across some misadventure or something happened to him. Maybe he got disorientated, we don’t know – at this stage, it is a very open book,” Hargreaves said.
“He was just going to have a look around, so very innocent. We have no reason to suspect otherwise.
“We know the conditions up here are not favourable to be out in the elements. The concern for us going forward is that we know it’s going to get colder ... you spend 24 hours out in these conditions and it’s quite harmful to your health.
“Even if you’re out here and you have got the right gear on, the fact is if you have gotten wet, it’s going to be awkward for you in these conditions.”
Hargreaves said detectives were keen to speak to anyone in the area who might have seen Christos or anyone who owned accommodation where he could have taken shelter overnight.
Police have been searching for the man since he disappeared on Friday. A large search recommenced on Sunday morning, including members of the police mounted branch, search and rescue, and air wing, as well as Ambulance Victoria, Parks Victoria, the State Emergency Service and local volunteers.
Dinner Plain is a small town 13 kilometres from Mount Hotham Alpine Resort and a little under four hours’ drive from Melbourne.
Police said anyone with information about the whereabouts of Christos should call 000 or Wangaratta police station on (03) 5723 0888.
