Biden congratulates Albanese

By Marta Pascual Juanola

US President Joe Biden is the latest world leader to congratulate Anthony Albanese on his election win, as the prime minister-elect prepares to fly to Tokyo for the Quad security talks on Tuesday.

According to a statement by the White House, in a phone call between both leaders this evening, Biden committed to strengthening the US-Australia alliance and praised Albanese over his decision to fly immediately to Japan to attend the summit, which he described as “a vital opportunity” to drive practical co-operation in the Indo-Pacific.

“President Biden looks forward to a close partnership between our administrations that will benefit the American people, the Australian people, and the world, starting with consequential meetings in Japan this week,” the statement read.

Albanese and his senior leadership team will be sworn in on Monday to allow him and Foreign Minister-elect Penny Wong to attend the talks with the leaders of the United States, Japan, and India.

David Pocock hopeful of prevailing over Liberal’s Zed Seselja

Former rugby star and conservationist David Pocock is growing more confident of ousting Liberal Senator Zed Seselja from his ACT Senate spot.

Neither Pocock nor Seselja are calling it yet but Seselja, who was the Pacific minister, wrote on Facebook that he was hoping early votes would boost his support.

“At this stage, it is too early to determine a result for the second ACT Senate seat,” he said.

“Much of the vote is yet to be counted, including significant numbers of pre-poll and postal ballots, which traditionally provide a boost to the Liberal count.”

Pocock said the count, which shows his primary vote at 22 per cent, was encouraging.

“Our campaign put people first, running on a really positive policy platform that reflected what Canberrans want for our future,” he said.

“I’ve been humbled by the support, and whatever happens in the coming days and weeks, I’m excited about the opportunity to keep speaking up for my community.”

Tim Wilson is conceding the Melbourne seat of Goldstein to teal independent Zoe Daniel.

He began to cry as he talked about the support from his husband, Ryan.

“Nobody pretends you’re not shattered after something like this,” he said.

“My contribution at this point appears to be ending. It’s challenging to face the fact. It is what it is.”

He said that looking at himself in the mirror, he could unequivocally say he did everything he could.

He would not comment on his political future when asked if this was the end of his career in parliament.

“I’m a fighter, I always have been ... I’m just looking forward to taking some down time, resting and looking to the future,” he said.

He said defying his prime minister to oppose an extradition treaty with China was one of the achievements of which he was most proud.

Nail-biter for Liberal’s Andrew Constance in Gilmore

By Latika Bourke

The race in the NSW seat of Gilmore is turning out to be an absolute nail-biter.

The Liberals were hopeful of claiming this seat back with Andrew Constance switching from state politics to contest the seat.

Constance is ahead in primary votes, but in preferences, Labor’s Fiona Phillips remains ahead by just a few hundred votes.

She suffered a 2.46 per cent swing against her but the seat remains too close to call.

Pacific leader welcomes Albanese’s climate plan

By Latika Bourke

Fiji Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has congratulated Anthony Albanese for his election win and welcomed the introduction of Labor’s climate plan.

Labor’s 2030 climate reduction targets are already likely to come into focus with the teal independents pushing for much tougher goals of 60 per cent cuts by the end of this decade.

Australia’s inaction on climate change has been a long-running sore spot with Pacific neighbours, a point underlined by Bainimarama’s tweet earlier today.

‘I want to change the country’: Albanese

By Natassia Chrysanthos

Marrickville Library became a backdrop to tooting car horns, dozens of selfies and several rounds of applause this morning as Anthony Albanese made his first appearance in his inner-west Sydney electorate since winning the election last night.

Children stood on tiptoes to get a glimpse of the action and the elderly hovered enthusiastically around the media pack as the member for Grayndler brought his dog, Toto – dressed in a Labor scarf – for a coffee in the outdoor plaza with a selection of friends and colleagues.

There were cheers of “We love you Albo” from across the road while the Labor leader beamed and posed for photos with eager locals proud to have elected their seat’s first prime minister.

“He’s not just the next PM, but he’s going to be the best PM,” said 76-year-old Richard Gonsalves, who has lived in Marrickville for 19 years, and yelled out his congratulations to Albanese.

“It’s too good. He is beautiful; he is so human,” he added.

His wife, Rose, echoed the sentiment: “He speaks from his heart, he’s approachable, and he means what he says.”

Albanese told reporters that his victory last night had been a “big moment in my life”.

“But what I want it to be is a big moment for the country. I do want to change the country and change the way that politics operates in this country,” he said.

He said his ministers would be sworn in tomorrow on an interim basis, and there would be “some changes in policy, particularly with regard to climate change and our engagement with the world on those issues”.
