Heavy police presence as Comanchero enforcer’s younger brother farewelled - Sky News Australia

Omar Zahed's two brothers - Comanchero bikie enforcer Tarek and Abdul - have missed his funeral which was guarded by a heavy police contingent at a Lakemba mosque on Friday.

High-ranking Comanchero bikie Tarek Zahed’s younger brother has been farewelled with a heavy police contingent present in Lakemba on Friday.

Omar Zahed, 39, was gunned down next to his brother at an Auburn gym on Tuesday night less than a week after police warned the pair they were in imminent danger if they continued to live their normal lives.

A small group of mourners attended the mosque which was heavily guarded by police before leaving to attend Rookwood cemetery where he was buried in a green coffin.

Omar’s mother attended the funeral in a wheelchair and was surrounded by family members who are reeling after the two brothers were shot down.

Sergeant at arms for the Comanchero bikie gang, Tarek was unable to attend the funeral and is still at Westmead Hospital after he was shot ten times in the head, body, arms and legs during the attack.

The youngest Zahed brother, Abdul, 37, is currently in prison charged with 11 offences but since the shooting made an application to the NSW Supreme Court to be granted bail.

Abdul’s appealed for bail so he could care for his sick mother and attend Omar’s funeral but the application was refused despite Justice Stephen Rothman supporting the claim.

“I would urge Corrective Services NSW to allow the applicant to attend his brother’s funeral, even if under supervision,” Justice Rothman said, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The newspaper further said Crown Prosecutor Rafaella Buttini claimed to have consulted with police who have concerns about Abdul should he be released.

“NSW Police indicated to me this morning that they are in possession of information, credible information, that suggests should the applicant (Zahed) be released, there are significant concerns of further violence,” the court heard.

“Information received by the police indicates the applicant is enraged at the murder of his brother (Omar) and attempted murder of his other brother (Tarek).

“The police hold significant concerns given that they possess information that the applicant wishes to enact revenge on his release.”

Among those paying their respects was underworld figure Ahmed Elomar who recently attended the funeral of gangster Mahmoud “Brownie” Ahmad who was shot dead with a $1 million bounty on his head.

With the underworld connections to the funeral, several police officers from Taskforce Raptor patrolled the surrounding streets as did senior officers from Strike Force Hawk, the Daily Telegraph reported.

A PolAir helicopter surveyed the area during the funeral while police breath tested mourners as they left the mosque.

A week before the shooting Police had told the two Zahed brothers they were in danger with Tarek known to have had a minimum $1 million bounty on his head from rival groups.

Despite the warnings the Zahed’s continued their normal lives resulting in the death of Omar.

A Sydney gangster said it was one slip up that left Omar, 39, dead and his older brother in an induced coma at Westmead Hospital.

"Anyone with a hit on their head makes sure they don't have a routine," the source, who did not want to be named, told The Daily Telegraph.

"Tarek f****d it, the dumb c*** said he was going to the gym last night, like he did the same time the night before, the night before the nights before."

Tarek and Omar were standing in the foyer of the Bodyfit gym on Parramatta road on Tuesday at 8pm when police alleged an Audi Q7 pulled up and two men opened fire.

The siblings lay in pools of their own blood after being struck by multiple bullets in the head, arms, legs and stomach.

One witness claimed he heard 20 bullets being unloaded in the space of 20 seconds.

Staff members, horrified gym-goers and NSW Police officers provided first aid but the younger Zahed brother died at the scene.

The vehicle, along with a second Audi of the same model, were later found torched in a crescent in Berala at about 8:10pm and on Murray Street in Greenacre at 8:20pm.
