Live breaking news: Third leaders debate between Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese taking place - 9News

While using a one dollar coin as a prop, Anthony Albanese says he wouldn't support a decision by the Fair Work Commission to make a real wage cut.

"The cost of everything is going up. The cost of food and vegetables and meat, the essentials in life," he says.

"The idea that after everything we've been through in the pandemic, minimum wage workers would get a real wage cut is something that I don't support.

Albanese says he'd support a Fair Work Commission decision to increase the minimum wage 5.1 per cent, in line with inflation and the equivalent of $1 an hour extra from the current rate of $20.33.

Morrison criticises Albanese for running "off at the mouth" and won't name a figure he would support, saying it is up to the Fair Work Commission to make decisions about wages.

"The Fair Work Commission is the right place to do that," he says.

"And the reason that is is because the economy needs stability and it needs certainty, particularly with the many things that are pressuring down on the economy today."
