‘Will take hold’: Gladys’ warning to Australia - NEWS.com.au

Gladys Berejiklian has issued a stark warning to all Australians — and their state leaders — about the Delta strain running rampant in Sydney.

Gladys Berejiklian says the Delta strain “will take hold” when state borders eventually open up and Australians must prepare by getting vaccinated.

The New South Wales Premier issued the stark warning to her colleagues around the country on Tuesday morning as the state recorded 753 new cases of Covid-19 and hit the vaccination milestone of six million jabs.

Ms Berejiklian said “we have to be real” about the unrelenting spread of the Delta strain as Greater Sydney endures its ninth week of lockdown.

“It is a plague, a contagious strain of a contagious disease which is sweeping the world,” she said.

Densely populated and diverse NSW was the “first state confronting the reality of the Delta strain”, Ms Berejiklian said, but other jurisdictions “will have to go through it”.

“Other states who have had zero cases for a long time, when they open their borders and welcome international travel, welcome people from other states, the Delta strain will take hold.

“(This) why it is important to be prepared by getting high vaccine rates, ensuring the health system is in place to deal with that.”

Ms Berejiklian said in NSW each positive case is infecting an average of 1.3 others, a figure as high as nine elsewhere in the world.

“It is hard to say going through our most difficult times in NSW, but we’ve done incredibly well compared to other parts of the world,” she said.

Ms Berejiklian said an announcement would come later in the week about additional freedoms for vaccinated residents in September and October following the six million jab milestone.

Further breakthroughs — such as 70 and 80 per cent of the state double jabbed — will mean “living much more freely than we are”, she said.

The premier said the NSW health system “absolutely” had the capacity to deal with opening up when the population is 80 per cent fully vaccinated.

Blacktown, Burwood, Fairfield, Canterbury and Bankstown were among the areas Ms Berejiklian praised for going from very low vaccination rates to some of the highest in the state.

People aged 16 to 39 living in the 12 Sydney local government areas of concern have been urged to come forward and get vaccinated, after new appointments were opened up for the group.

“You will be guaranteed priority to get your jab in the next few days,” Ms Berejiklian told this demographic on Tuesday.
