Australians should be offered a $300 payment if they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by December, Labor leader Anthony Albanese says, as part of an incentive for Australians to get the jab.
Key points:
- Labor wants the government to introduce a financial incentive for Australians to get vaccinated
- Anthony Albanese says fully vaccinated people should get a one-off $300 payment
- The government has suggested incentives could be part of the vaccine rollout strategy as more people get the jab
Mr Albanese said the cash payment would be a "much-needed shot in the arm for businesses and workers struggling from lockdowns" to prevent the spread of the virus.
"The Government has guaranteed that Australia will have more than enough vaccines to meet the 80 per cent target by 1 December," Mr Albanese said in a statement.
"The faster this is achieved, the faster the recovery as we emerge from the lockdowns that are bleeding hundreds of millions of dollars a day from the nation’s finances."
Labor said the proposal would inject up to $6 billion into the economy if all eligible Australians got the jab and spent the cash payment.
The government has indicated as part of its transition plan out of the pandemic that its next phase, which begins once 70 per cent of eligible Australians are vaccinated, may include "encouraging uptake through incentives".
Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly has also previously expressed support for incentives to get the shot.
"I think we really do need to look for incentives, as many incentives as we can for people to become vaccinated," Professor Kelly said in May.
In the US, President Joe Biden recently called on states to pay $100 to unvaccinated Americans who got their shots. Some US states have even run million-dollar lotteries to encourage inoculation.
The idea behind cash incentives is they would give hesitant people the push they need to get vaccinated.
The Prime Minister acknowledged last month some people had become hesitant to get AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine after official advice recommended the Pfizer shot was the preferred jab for people under 60.
The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation today reaffirmed its advice that, in a large outbreak, the benefits of receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine outweighed any risk of rare side effects for all age groups.
