Day 1 at the NYS Fair: Today’s handpicked menu and schedule - syracuse.com

abasalaka.blogspot.com

Geddes, N.Y. — After more than a year of going without so many thing we enjoy, we finally have our State Fair back. Sure, it’ll be a little different because of Covid-19, and we have to wear masks in the buildings, but consider it baby steps in the right direction.

The gates open at 11 a.m. today. By 11:05 a.m., I will be eating my first high-calorie sandwich and grabbing my first beverage before hitting the first concert.

I write about food for syracuse.com and The Post-Standard, I rely on readers to tell me what’s good in Central New York. That’s exactly what I’m counting on during the State Fair. I’ll be taking your suggestions and highlighting the best food and drinks here.

If you eat or drink something that knocks your socks off, text me (315-382-1984) and I’ll give it a try. Heck, I might even join you for a meal and pick up the tab.

Today’s Menu

Lunch: Just because soon-to-be-ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo won’t be eating a sausage sandwich at the fair doesn’t mean we have to go without. Basilio’s makes a mean sausage. It’s a little spicier than most, and the fresh bun is the perfect size to hold the meat and the mountain of crisp peppers and onions. Basilio’s has been grilling sausage here for more than 60 years. They know what they’re doing.

Dinner: I usually end each day with a gyro. Today I’ll be finishing with one from Kiki’s. This Camillus restaurant is shutting its doors during the fair’s 18-day run so it can set up shop here.

Dessert: Toss & Fire Pizza created a few special pizzas for the Fair this year. The Caramel Apple Pizza sounds like the perfect after-dinner treat. It’s New York State apples with a crumb topping, caramel sauce and icing. It goes into a wood-fire oven and comes out perfectly crispy on the bottom and moist on top.

Beverage: Utica Club beer. I write most of my stories at Tully’s Draft House near Gate 1, and it probably shows. Regardless, they pour a decent UC, and at $4, it’s among the cheapest beer on the grounds.
