A student at a prestigious Brisbane girls school has tested positive to Covid-19 as the state grapples with a concerning outbreak of the highly contagious strain of the virus.
Brisbane Girls Grammar School (BGGS) parents were told on Monday a student who attended school on Friday had since tested positive and was unknowingly infectious while in class.
Anyone who attended the grounds of the Spring Hill school between 8am and 6pm is considered a close contact and must isolate with their household immediately for 14-days regardless of the result of a test.
The new case is in addition to an infected adult who attended the BGGS open day on Friday evening, extending the risk of infection through to 8pm.
Queensland Health sent a letter to parents on Monday afternoon outlining the threat to the school community.
Anyone who attended three sites within the school grounds at the specific times below are also considered close contacts.
- 6pm – 6:45pm: Main entrance area – queue for food vans
- 6:45pm – 7:05pm: Level 1 Strings Room Creative Learning Centre
- 7:14pm -7:45pm: New Science Learning Building
“The latest case who is a member of the school community was at school from 8am on 30 July and who also attended the Open Day until 6pm,” Queensland Health said in a letter to parents.
“Although the latest case attended Brisbane Girls Grammar School on 30 July 2021 while infectious, they were not aware that they were infectious at the time.”
“In the situation of Brisbane Girls Grammar School, the quarantine period now finishes at 11:59pm on Friday, 13 August.”
Queensland Health said the latest case expanded the number of people now considered close contacts who were on the school grounds.
The list of exposure sites in the state exploded beyond 100 venues as the southeast’s lockdown was extended to Sunday.
