The partner of the cleaner at the centre of Greater Brisbane’s recent lockdown has tested positive to COVID-19.
Queensland chief health officer Jeannette Young confirmed the positive result on Monday afternoon but said it would not affect the easing of lockdown restrictions.
She said the man — whose partner contracted the UK variant of the virus while working at the Hotel Grand Chancellor — had been in quarantine since January 7.
“We know this particular variant of COVID-19 is more contagious, so this result is unsurprising,” Dr Young said.
“However, it highlights the importance of why the Greater Brisbane lockdown was so important to ensure any potential spread of the virus is contained.”
The man has so far undergone two tests, with the first coming back negative.
Genomic sequencing is being conducted and Dr Young said the UK variant was to be expected.
Authorities are working to determine the man’s potential infectious period and contact tracing is underway.
Additional testing of other close contacts will continue this week.
“We’re asking anyone who has been to specific locations the first positive case has been to get tested and go into quarantine for 14 days since exposure,” Dr Young said.
Anyone who visited the following locations is asked to get tested, regardless if they have symptoms or not:
- Coles Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown on January 5 between 7.30am to 8.00am
- Woolworths Calamvale North on January 3 between 11am and midday
- Nextra Sunnybank Hills Newsagent on January 5 between 8.00am and 8.15am
Dr Young said people who had been to those locations and received a negative test still needed to continue monitoring for symptoms and get retested.
A 24-hour a day fever clinic has been set up at Eight Mile Plains Community Health Centre.
