One new case in NSW: child infected with COVID-19 - NEWS.com.au

NSW has recorded one new case of COVID-19 to 8pm Tuesday, a child linked to the Berala cluster.

“Pleasingly, overnight we had one case of community transmission, it was a child in the household of existing cases,” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

She said genomic sequencing results had also now confirmed that a man and woman in Mount Druitt who tested positive earlier in the week to COVID-19 were linked to the Berala outbreak.

More than 20,000 people were tested in the latest reporting period, which chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said was a “critical” mark.

“It is critical we achieve over the 20,000 mark (daily),” she said

“I’m particularly urging people in the Greater Western Sydney area – so that picks up all of south western Sydney (such as) Liverpool, Fairfield, and Bankstown – to get tested.

“It is critical we have those high rates of testing to make sure we track down any undetected chains of transmission.”

She said while health officials had determined a genomic linkage between the Mount Druitt couple and the Berala cluster, they were yet to determine how the pair became infected.

“We have not identified a point where that person crossed over with anyone known to have COVID-19. It means we are currently testing widely around what we call ‘upstream contacts’, a broad net, to find any missing link in those chains of transmission,” Dr Chant said.

The state’s sewage surveillance program has also detected fragments of the virus at the treatment plant in West Hornsby.

This catchment covers Glenorie, Wahroonga, Thornleigh, Pennant Hills, Cherrybrook, Castle Hill, Galston, Dural, Westleigh, Glenhaven, Waitara, Hornsby, Normanhurst and West Pennant Hills.

“Everyone in these areas is asked to be alert for symptoms, to get tested immediately if they appear and then isolate until they receive a negative result,” NSW Health said.

NSW also recorded six cases in hotel quarantine.
